I have always put the spare inside over the axle,when I get to my destination I put it back in the front locker,also if you do need to change a wheel its a lot easier getting it out of the van than laying under the van undoing it.
In my opinion its not worth the money getting a carrier fitted.
Sometimes the simple fixes are often the best
