Quote:
Check for coolant leaks from the thermostat hosing and also check for coolant staining in the 'V' Sounds good value for a tourer. |

The V6 is a pretty robust unit, check that the cam belts have been done, due at 6 years or 90,000 miles which ever comes first. listen for nasty rattle noises from top of the engine this is caused by failing VIS valves in the inlet manifold, not terminal but if it has been left unfixed for to long may require a hole new manifold.
Head gasket failure is rare on the V6, shine a torch into V area and look for orange staining as this would indicate a leaking thermostat. Other than that general condition is a good guide. The V6 is a thirsty engine, if MPG is important long term I would hold out for the diesel, but facter in the saving of buying the petrol. Richard |

V6 is a very mixed bag, drive it gentle and you will see 34 mpg at best, horse it and low 20's. Budget for 30mpg all round real world.

I totally agree with colin regarding the fuel consumption,if this is a concern, remember diesel variants in the condition you state are not available at the price you are paying for the V6.

I would second everything said here.
Cambelt is most important thing, then inlet manifold and then leaking thermostat. You need paperwork for these. After that just look under the bonnet and look at the condition of it - is it dirty? is everything neatly clipped down? have some clips been broken off by a clumsy mechanic? anything that doesn't feel right, walk away - there are plenty of other examples out there. Give a drive on the open road and get it above 4000 rpm. the engine should keep steadily pushing onwards, anything else and you may be looking at the inlet manifold being broken. i had a broken rear spring on mine, you can spot it by measuring distance between top of tyre and wheel arch on rear wheels - should be almost same on both sides. but this is cheap to fix compared to cambelts / inlet manifold. |

2.0 V6 is a lovely and reliable engine but I could not manage 30mpg from mine. If however you don't do a lot of miles, and you've found a nice car that you'd be happy with, as already stated the saving you make thanks to the higher depreciation of petrol models might mean that things balance out OK financially, in which case you should go for it!
