Mugged
A friends partner was unfortunate to be mugged few weeks ago, in Birmingham City Centre. She cancelled her credit cards and told her bank.
Later on after her monthly salary had gone in, she went to withdraw some money but was told there were insufficient funds available. Upon querying this she was told that eight different direct debits of £150 each, had been set up, of which she had no knowledge. They were all to an overseas bank. Whoever mugged her, obviously had some knowledge of banks and what level checks are carried out. So while the bank investigates she has a month of no money. So if anyone is unfortunate enough to be mugged beware of this sting and check what direct debits you have. Bob |

I think the bank will refund immediately if you ask. "Direct Debit Indemnity". May not be the case as this is fraud and not a DD she set up and has been abused. Definitely worth mentioning though.
Hope she is OK. Last edited by GreyGhost; 22nd September 2009 at 15:27.. |

Absolutely, bank should refund staright away then they'll track down the direct debit mandate which should prove NOT to have her signature on it. Bank will have to suffer the loss as they should have checked the sig.
