Default Yet another double DIN

Not finshed at all , just my first fit,.

tray made from old plastic A4 tray ( the other 2 make up my car PC case)

Still not happy with the lack of a flush fit . but just not enough depth.

Fascia still to be final laquered and polished.

But still worth a picture or three!!

the cheepy ebay unit

the plasticky tray

Great job, double din seems to be the future for R75/MG ZT users on a budget.

thanks for the comment, I've still not sure about it ,

still want built in sat nav.
( got a Tomtom 500 at the mo)

And really miss the steering controls.

I think I would prefer a flush fitting touch panel LCD, driving a proper car PC.

I've got a car PC built up from odds and sods , about A4 x 2 inches high.
just fiddling with the software.

So thats where the next project will probably go
Most of the family have been quite disinterested in this , but have been nagging that rear headrest screens would be a good idea?. more Expense!.

looking good, i dont think you will ever achieve a complete flush fit with one of these units as the Rover facias have a curve and of course you can get away with that when fitting a single din but not a double din given the size and the fact that you cannot tilt the unit back at all when fitting.

The plastic tray idea is a good one and we are all coming up with different ideas for fitting.

If yours doesnt have a satnav, you could always consider buying a double din that has, you have done the hard work already and it should slot in ?

I have just solved my steering controls with the PAC SW1x from USA, not cheap at £50 with postage but working well and should work providing the unit you have has an infra red remote

The plastic tray idea is a good one and we are all coming up with different ideas for fitting.

-----------

I originally cut a single din up and soldered it to make a d-din tray , wasn't strong enough, then went to a couple of angle metal strips, but run out of suitable metal..

Then saw the leftovers from my homebrew Car PC case .. a few pop rivets later.. voila!!

A bit rough n ready

made it larger and spent ages back a forth , trimming a bit , try a fit etc
Seems to work oK plenty strong enough, the LCD isn't fixed in at all yet, quite heavy & tricky to get at the sides although the facsia is fitted last so got that to sort.

AS long as the blinding acceleration of the ZT auto does plop it out !!

Can you post more info? Pics so far, details, costs. Intended use?

I work in IT and feel I should have one, but can't quite think why I'd need one other than as a media centre - then I'd need screens. But I still fancy building one...

There loads of ways of doing one of these , easiest nowadays is a Asus EEE chopped. duff screen. etc .. tiny , right volts too.

My heap has been built up from anything I could find or buy cheap.
ITG MB, CPU and other odds from fleabay. extra USB PCi card and sound card on their sides, 512 mb ram, 1000 CPU, fan chopped up from a laptop, case from a plastic Desk tray set, 120watt 12v PSU. IDE Compact flash adaptor with 4 GB card. and or 30gb 2.5 Hard drive, laptop or usb DVD drive

This chucks Xp around pretty well andis really quick with Linux , havn't decided on a Front end yet , or actually if I'll even use it in the car .. we will see.
But a car pC is all down to keeping it small in size and thrifty on the Amps.

Touch screen LCD's are the most costly items , I havn't got one yet. but do have a tiny ps2 touch pad that works well so could get by without touch screen for the moment

cost to date around 50 quidlets.

take care

Chris
