Default Kia Sportage, Opinions Sought.

My stepdaughter is in the market for a secondhand car & has said that she quite likes the Kia Sportage. I think l have the impression that they have a fairly good reputation but would appreciate views from anyone who has experience of them, mainly petrol as l don't envisage a diesel car being purchased. Max budget will be about £5k l think.

Thanks very much.

I can only say about a friend who purchased a Sportage, Nice car, not the most Economical and consumes a lot of oil, Due to the valve stem seals going hard..

Other than that I cant add any more

There was a diesel one being broken for it's engine in my local scrapyard a few years ago. It was about 10 years old (so not sure if this would be the same model your stepdaughter is looking at ?) but looked to be a very tidy, well looked after car.

Unfortunately, it had failed MOT on rear subframe corrosion, holes everywhere - not something I really expected to see on a reasonably new Kia.

Apparently, a replacement subframe which is a large, tubular set-up (much bigger than on a 75), was only available from Kia at great expense, plus a big labour bill to drop the whole rear end, rendering an otherwise decent car uneconomical to repair.

So worth having a good poke around underneath any prospective purchase

If you get an all wheel drive (AWD) model and intend sticking to Kia's servicing schedules for everything, be prepared to rotate the tyres front to rear every 7K miles. The over-clever anti-skid system causes peculiar effects from the front and rear drives if the front tyres are a couple of millimetres more worn than the rears. The slight difference in rotational speed is interpreted as front wheel spin. This can mean replacing your tyres as a full set or always fitting a new pair on the front. Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with ours (2011 2litre.turbo diesel AWD).

An RAC guy I know was telling me two makes of cars he never goes out too are Kia and Hyundai, still not sure I would want one though. Depreciation is bad especially when they are newish. An older one with lots of service history with a reasonable mileage is probably a good bet. I have heard about the high oil consumption and if not watched could end up being costly.

Thanks all. Well it happens that she was actually hoping to keep to around £3k so that would limit her to the earlier models (depreciation not an issue) but we have the ULEZ to contend with which presents an extra consideration & makes older petrol versions more likely to be compliant. There are a couple of older lower mileage ones l've seen for around that money but l think they were diesel as it appears most are which is not surprising seeing as it was the most recommended engine option & popular fuel ten years back, especially with SUV's. Prices are still up on account of this new car/component shortage too which limits options further. Not a good time to be buying a secondhand car at the moment but she has the option of using her mum's Fiesta for the time being so it's not imperative that she buys now. We'll keep our eyes open though.
Thanks again.

Interesting to read this a quick look online shows this isn't isolated to that one car you saw.

A 2009 Kia Sportage taken in 2019: (can mods or someone decrease photo size, I have tried but unable to, thank you)
