power steering fluid?
hope this is okay to post here,..
The power steering on my Rover 200 bubble has just started to become quite audible. Becoming louder with increased engine speed. Its the trusty non intercooled Diesel L series engine. I'm guessing it needs new/top up of power steering fluid. Can anybody tell me what type I need? Its very confusing with some people saying I need ATF fluid, and yet others saying I need Power steering fluid? Is the stuff in Halfords okay? Should I buy the ATF fluid? or the Power Steering fluid? Or do I need something else entirely? And if so, where can I buy some off the shelf asap? cheers |

Form memory, fluid meeting Dexron IID or Dexron III is required in the 45td.
As long as the fluid meets these specs, it will be fine. http://www.halfords.com/motoring/eng...ering-fluid-1l |

Thanks for the response. Is it worth removing all the old fluid first and replacing with fresh? would a 1Ltr bottle be enough to replace it all? cheers |

I have since checked it and it is/was below the minimum line. It's now topped up with some fluid I found in the car. Car used to belong to my Dad who passed away in September 2016 from a sudden heart attack totally out of the blue. Guess he had been using the bottle I found just to keep it topped up. Will have to sort the leak though. On a side note.. my sisters Ford Mundaneo also makes the same sound. Maybe she needs a top up too? |

How long since it had an MoT? If it's leaking steering fluid, it won't pass. Was the fluid you found/used pink/red? Dexron 2 (red) is standard spec for most older steering systems and standard, older auto transmissions.

I took it for MOT in July.. Was never mentioned, must be a pretty slow leak? Although.. I remember it's Power Steering Pump did pack in a few years ago while I was borrowing the car from my Dad, and dropped all its fluid on the floor, so maybe the bottle I found is from back then? |

In the 75 diesel it has a nasty habit of leaking in to the alternator or get on to the belts eventually so you cant leave it too long, but have a look and decide. More than likely it can get you through the winter with a top up and deal with it when the car is a bit more accessible, and warmer. |
