Default Rear number plate light circuit board

2003 Rover 75 CDTi - Had lots of problems with number plate lights sometimes working but mostly not. Can someone please explain to a simple soul how to by-pass the circuit board. All seems a bit technical for something I think could be fairly simple. Any diagram would help as I'm sure to fit the wrong wire to the wrong contact without! No problem in dismantling everything - just worried about how to wire it.
Thanks for any advice.
