Dongles
Just about to order myself a laptop - it is wireless ready - as most or even all lappy's are nowadays.
Looking at a Vodaphone Dongle - Modem Stick. £15 for 3Gb is ample for what I'll need, but just one thing confuses me. On the price plan, it mentions 'Modem price'. Am I correct in assuming it's for Desktops & Laptops that don't have wireless built into them already? http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/mobile-br...dgmPubId=13483

The dial-up wireless modem you are talking about connecs you via the mobile telephone network and is useful if you do not have access to a home/office wireless network.
I use a 3 network UK dongle on here in Austria because I have no other access to net (outside work) and it offers me service at the same price as UK, ithink the Vodafone one if used in UK is a lot quicker. |

Not wishing to confuse the matter...
I mean the Wireless aspect - I can boot a lappy up, and it searches for any wireless networks. Not to be confused with the dial-up modem lappys have!

Yes, A wireless enabled laptop will search for any local wireless networks and allow access if you have permission or password, if no wireless signal in range then you may need a Vodafone (etc) dongle to connect via mobile telephone network.

3Gb modem stick would cost nothing upfront and then £15 a month for the service. 3Gb modem stick pro would cost £99 upfront and then £15 a month for the service. Last edited by ColinB; 12th October 2008 at 09:52.. Reason: can't spell |

I know what your saying about PC World! Must admit, I did have a look, but for a decent spec machine, but it's a fair whack of money for a 24 month contract. Cheaper to get another laptop from another supplier & go seperate for the Dongle.

Hi Tatts.
Dont know your needs, but have you seen Voda do a netbook (mini laptop) @ 25.00 per month and 30 per month for 1gb and 3gb download usage accordingly... also as these modems use the telephone GPRS network, please check your coverage as its split into two types.... 2G...slow @ between 12-38kps (dial up speed) and 3G....fast @ 1-3Mbs (broadband speed) and now up to 7Mbs in london.. Voda have a postcode viewer you can use on their .co.uk website. Again, the pro with HSUPA wont do its high speed upload in a 2G area... I apologize if you know this already mate.... Regards
