Default Crankshaft Pulley - Impact wrench

Hi all,

After being quoted £330 to replace the crankshaft pulley and belts on my diesel tourer I thought I would give it a go myself. It also gives me an excuse to buy an impact gun .

I don't have a compressor so electric is my way to go. Any advice on mains vs. 18v battery. While a battery one would be more convenient I am concerned it wouldn't have the power to shift the pulley nut which I guess could be torqued up to 150+ nm?

Any thoughts from folks who have gone down this route would be great.

Many thanks,

Mark S.

The Machine Mart '24v' impact wrench has undone everything I've tried to undo with it. Not done the crank pulley though.

I know it doesn't directly help you choose an electric impact gun but my 450 ft/lb windy gun had that crank pulley bolt off in a jiffy! Handy to tighten it up too. Biggest pain is the tensioner and finding a way to A. pull it enough to get the belts off, and B hold it off so that you can work in the area.

There is plenty of variation with how tight some of these crank shaft pulley bolts are - you could double or even treble your 150Nm if you are unlucky.

I've got a mains electric impact gun and it has undone just about everything asked of it, except the crank pulley bolt.

I made a holding tool and used a 3/4 drive socket with a 5 foot bit of scaffold bar and promptly broke the drive bar.

Welded up a replacement and with all my weight on it finally undid the bolt.

Another option - maybe apprehend a mobile commercial vehicle tyre fitter, these guys cannot afford to mess about wasting time with tools that either fail, or incabable of the tast it's confronted with. At worst they may be able to try a torque multiplier for devilishly tight bolts. I know some have given a good report on Machine Mart's products but be careful of what battery type it has on a portable one as the chunky batteries are absolute pants and unless it is in constant use the battery pack dies fairly quickly (Just my experience). Like Phil T-4 I now use Ryobi nut gun without issue at all.

Thanks everyone, I have ordered a mains impact wrench and have been butchering a lovely 24mm spanner in order to get access to the tensioner.

Regards,

Well I wish you the best of luck - I just hope your pulley bolt isn't as tight as the one I had to undo.

If it doesn't work, if you are not too far away, I can pop over with a tool my lad made for undoing the bolt.
