Default Cut out and won't resrart

My Rover diesel estate started, and drove a few yards then cut out. I had previously driven about three miles, and then parked the car. It would not restart. The fuel light had just come on, as it has done before, and I have driven much further. So I put in two gallons, and now shows just over quarter full. The under bonnet pump is whirring for a minute or so, then stops, but repeats if I turn off the ignition, and then on again. The cam sensor seems to be a favourite, with non start issues, but would that cause it to cut out? The fuel filter is recent. Thanks in advance.
Paul.

I am by no means an expert, but from what I've read the cam sensor, whilst often the cause of non-starting, has no effect once the engine is running, and is unlikely to be the cause of cutting out. If pumps are not the issue, I would recommend checking the plenums for water -- especially if you have had rain recently.

Yep - try putting another couple of gallons in the tank.

As mentioned it can't be the cam sensor but could be the crank sensor. When you crank it over does the rev counter needle bounce up a bit?

And of course, as also mentioned, you have checked that the plenum chamber is dry and the ECM hasn't gone for a swim?
