Default Rover 75 CDTI 2.0L will not start

WE moved to Lake Balaton in Hungary 4 years ago. I bought my great Rover 75 with me and we registered it here. It's been great to drive and I have now reached 130K miles.I am sort of hoping that it still has a long way to go based on it's general condition and local driving only.I regard it as one of my classics.
About a month ago, it stopped en route to the shops and we have struggled ever since.
In the absence of a local Rover specialist, the car is serviced by a local BMW garage who are also the area's diesel engine specialists and have appropriate engine diagnostics equipment. They have tried everything including; fuel pumps and rebuilding, full check of ignition system; cam and crank sensors; wiring loom; key check etc. As far as they are concerned the mechanical and basic electrical side of the car is fine. They have checked the plenum area and the ECU box for any sign of water damage, but none to be found.
They are convinced the problem is the ECU but are reluctant to tackle a change - probably based upon lack of specific Rover 75 experience and the need to code the car into the box. (They are basically mechanical engineers)
The car is now sitting and will not start. I have been unable to find local - Hungarian or Austrian - Rover expertise garages.
I am stuck at this point. Can anyone provide a path to follow. I really do not want to scrap the car. Thanks for looking.

Hi Frank, I am more than capable of testing an NNN500340 DDE4 ECM...however given your location, I'd like to see it along with your EWS3 immobiliser too

Drop me a PM and we'll take it from there, I'm sure we can avoid scrapping your car

I hope Brian can fix it. give him a try.---

Strange though that a BMW garage doesn't understand a BMW engine.---

Well that won't take long - it hasn't got one.

With a diesel you compress the air to get it nice and hot, inject the fuel and it goes bang. Simples.

Or at least it was before they started bolting all the electronics on.

Oh dear, Apparently I can't post this message as it hasn't got 10 characters in it.

Guess it has now.
