Default Problem with New Fan....Is it the Right One

Hi All,

I have recently bought a fan and cowl with motor from ebay for my 2001 75 V6 Petrol with air con. Sold as part number PGJ000100.

The fan had no part number on it when it arrived.

It was fitted last Friday by my local garage who also did a re-gas on the air con.

The fan has stared to foul the slam panel when operating as it seems too close, the garage obvioulsy tried some minor mods by giving it a bit of a bash!

The fan has a silver box at about 2 o'clock, does this mean I have a diesel two speed? The new fan is 15+cm deep the old one 13cm,

Can anyone advise about whether I have the right fan and if so is there a mod to make it fit? If not can anyone identify the fan I have?

Getting this far has cost me about £500 and I am wondering about my next move.

I have followed the how to and disassembled the bumper etc. and taken some photos.

Any help gratefully received.

Mike

the later design is going to have a resistor (worth replacing it with a Jules resitor upgrade as part of fitting) but need to find someone with a replacement fan and your car model to find the sizing.

It sounds odd that its an obviously different size... have a look on Keith's sticky on Cooling Fans in the technical section too

Well well not seen that before!
Looks like the wrong fan to me(too deep as you say)
What about the diameter?

Resistor fits petrol & diesel (it's relay control box that differs)
I don't recognise the Siemens stamp either on the fan.

Genuine ones do not have this, also Rover assemblies have a yellow label covering the centre of the fan boss. (with a battery symbol on it)

Probably from a BMW car
Wonder why the garage didn't just refuse to fit it instead of bashing it & bodging it!!!

Hi and thanks for the information. I've read Keiths sticky but couldn't see anything specific to cover my problem.

The diameter of the fan is exactly the same.

The housing and fixings are exactly the same.

I think the garage fitted the fan and only noticed it was catching after putting it all back together.

Default Picture of fan assembly

Hi,

I have attached a picture of the complete new installed fan. Even the cut outs for the aircon are correct etc.

If it were a BMW unit could it be a NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-? with someone fitting a BMW motor and fan to a Rover cowl? But then i would not suppose that a BMW fan is any cheaper.

Very strange

The only other possibility is they've used the wrong surround, as petrol and diesel are different. It shouldn't fit (well it doesn't fit) unless they've tried to force it in.

Also check that the fan blade is fitted correctly to the spindle boss, as it will only go on in one position.

Another thought is the fan has been fitted on the wrong side of the fan surround, again it shouldn'ty fit but you never know.

Hi, I stripped my old fan out on Sunday, It is definately your fan shroud that is too deep, both my old and new shrouds are 13cm.( just measured them) The fact your new one is 15 must be the problem, You are unable to fit the motor to the wrong side of the shroud, you just cannot do it.. Diesel shrouds are a top half only affair IIRC.
My guess is that the shroud is from a 1.8 300w motor that is somewhat slimmer but I do have to confess I have only ever seen one in Keiths sticky. and it is the only variant that i guess may exist.

Very strange indeed, shame your not a bit closer I have a spare shroud (with a once repaired but now very dead three speed motor)

If you have your old shroud it is only a 10 min job to swap over once you have or the garage has stripped it out again. Cannot believe the butchery they have performed to get this to fit.

If you need the physical measurement of the correct fan motor with or without blades, just holler, 2 mins to dig it out.

Edit:...... as T cut says below, no guarantee the fan is correct either

The fan itself looks different/deeper than the standard one, which has a 15/16mm hole in the centre to enable you to hold the motor mounting flange. This fan doesn't appear to use the bayonet method and looks to be mounted on the motor using a different system (??).
