Default Rover 75 V8/MG ZT V8.

Hiya all I'm interested to know a bit more about the V8 engines that fitted to the 75 and ZT.

Overall what's its like to drive, what's the gearbox like and also performance is it good.

I'd like to know more about the engine and whole system as much as I can. I knows its a 4.6 V8 from a Ford Mustang, but that's it.

Otherwise I nothing about them.
Can anyone give a good review and write in your own experience please.

The gearbox is awful lol. Transmission shunt is a common problem too. It doesn't actually FEEL that fast but it sounds good.

Exceptional grip and handling in the dry but dangerous in the wet

Would I have another - god YEAH !

Gearbox is agricultural but functional, depends what you are used to, but it isn't the right car for snatching quick shifts anyway really.

I don't have an issue with it as my daily driver, can become a bit of a chore crawling in traffic on the left leg, but what non-auto is pleasant to drive in that situation really.

I'd describe it a s a Lazy V8 , sounds great possibly under-powered when you think of some snarling V8 Monster but in fact more than enough power to drive VERY quickly when ever you want or need to "it's effortless in its delivery" and on the road isn't to be found wanting.

Does it handle like some superhatch or sportscar, obviously not considering it's size and weight.
But I would personally say it handles fantastically when those considerations are factored in.
Add in the fact that the brakes & suspension set-up etc are still good to go for the 400bhp supercharged car and its a lot of car for the money!!

Dooydug is right in that it doesn't "FEEL" that fast, as it doesn't, but that's mainly because you are wrapped up in 2 tonnes of premium saloon and the SE has all the bells and whistles you could ever need (when taking into account the cars age)

I love mine and I can honestly say its because it puts a smile on my face EVERY day I drive it.
The effortless delivery and great sound.
Mines been off the road for the last 10 months due to my health and I've hated it and really missed driving it.
I can't wait to get it back on the road(hopefully from tomorrow, MOT dependent.

Cool

I've covered 2000 miles in the last 3 months in my 400BHP ZTT, and loved every mile. Brought a few smiles and left a few behind in the haze.

I've always wondered why, when Rover were looking for an engine they plumped for a Ford lump when they had their venerable Buick derived V8 on the shelf. This engine has done sterling service for many years, known intimately and loved my many, and available in 4.6 litre guise as used in the Range Rover?

Apparently it wouldn't meet the latest euro 4? emissions spec.

Unfortunately...that was essentially the reason... the 1950's originated lump could not be any further modified / updated to meet current standards... and i suspect putting an 'old' V8 in it may not be as good for PR / image of the new cars...? Am sure an exciting Mustang engine, tried and tested was a good choice? As much as i love the Rover V8, having owned different cars with the Rover V8 in it, in different forms (TR7V8 3.5, SD1 Vitesse 3.5, Defender 5.0, Rangie P38 4.6, Disco 2 4.0) i don't think that would've been the right choice going forward in the new millennium with the competition from other makers. Unfortunately.

Probably price was also a big consideration, manufacturers will often sell parts to other manufacturers for a lot less than you think. Car components cost a lot less than most people think, I know BMW are paying less than £100 for a complete set of seats for Mini but if you went into a dealership to buy those same seats you would probably be lucky to get them for less than £2k.

My guess MG Rover were probably paying a few hundred £'s as a drop in package and this was probably a lot less than making new engines in house.
