Windows 10 updates automatically. Sometimes if you 'Restart' then it will update too.

Yeah it's been updating automatically like that since I upgraded from win 7 to Win 10, I happened to be in the system settings section when I saw that it said updates available, install now or later. I clicked now & it went through the whole upgrade procedure that it did when I upgraded from Win 7, very unusual!

Yes, it's the November "platform update" to Windows 10. I guess the best comparison to previous Windows versions is a Service Pack, however it's more than that.

You'll probably be aware that Win 10 was/is the "last" version of Windows Microsoft intend to produce, and from now on they will be following a continuous update path like Apple and its iOS. This update is the first evidence of that.
Win10 was also not quite finished when it was released due to the new way MS sets deadlines, so this update adds some additional functionality that wasn't ready in time.

Essentially, think of this as a Windows 10.1 update.

Can`t say I have noticed a large update like the one described so I had a look on what my latest update was, I`m on Win 10 Pro:
Get these almost every day.
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.211.916.0)

Have a lot of this saying failed:
Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586
Eight (8) failed attempts on the 20th Nov.
is this last one the upgrade you are talking about??

That's the version 1511 update.... it's a major upgrade and goes through the 'upgrade' again.

I've had it on a few windows 10 PCs.

Probably the way of things to come, and microsoft do a major upgrade, we'll have to wait for and hour or more (depending on speed of PC).

Well that's just great isn't it? Updates should really tell the user how long it expects the update to take. An hour and half per user when spread across a company is going to cost several person/days worth of productivity. It's Bad enough as it is on Windows 7 with users complaining if it takes more than 5 minutes. (and yes, before anyone asks, we do run our own internal proxy update server - but that only helps us not download updates from the net for every machine, just once per update).

But this is better...... according to Microsoft

Hopefully they aren't going to do this too often. I would hope it's just when a major update is published. But I do agree that we should be warned it's going to take time.

Time to go and update a couple more PCs now

Yes that's the one, 1511, it did give me the option of updating it at a specific time but I thought it was just another normal update so just clicked install now.
