![]() At the moment I run two PS3s online connected via 2 x rj45s to my router that is approx four metres away. I am about to add a ps4 to my setup and was going to run yet another rj to the hub. I'm using a BT home hub 4. BT is not my provider but the hub is well behaved. Before I start installing another cable I'm wondering if it would be better to run one rj from the home hub and use a four port hub more local to the setup. Would this reduce speed (only two machines are used at the same time) or would it be better to stick with the setup I have and just run a third cable back to the router?

![]() You should notice no difference when using a hub, the bottleneck will almost certainly remain your internet connection. There is an alternative, which I think someone has mentioned in a previous posting, that of rj45 splitters. These use the spare cores in a standard cable, and at each end you have two connectors. I will try and find a link

![]() The exact connector may vary, depending if your cables go via a wall socket or direct to the hub and device. This would work if you have sockets http://www.amazon.co.uk/RJ-45-RJ45-N...j45+economiser

![]() Personally, I would either run another cable from the PS4 to the HomeHub.
If this is hard to do, then put in a 4 port (or more) gigabyte switch where your games consoles are, and use a single port on the HomeHub, and have short leads between the consoles and the switch. Economisers are, in my opinion, a last resort.

![]() Hi Nige, how`s things?
I run a single cable from the lounge Home Hub to the bedroom. the lounge one is full and the that feeds bedroom has a 5 port hub running a Laptop, Sky TV and an internet phone, less mess with cables, and if you have a spare Router you can use that instead of buying a new 4 port Etc. Ken. |

Thank you. I think I will give that a dry run and see how it goes. I wasn't sure if it would compromise speed as I can't afford to lose any. I'll use one of the existing RJs with a hub local to the setup. It's all in the same room with the Consoles sharing a shelf and the router a little over three metres away but on a 5 metre RJ. I can use short RJs local to the hub. Nige |

![]() I'd go with another wire all the way back to the BT hub.
As others have said, the internet connection to the outside world will always be the biggest bottleneck, but by keeping internal connections separate as much as possible, you reduce any traffic bottlenecking that may occur within your network (though in these days of gigabit networking its unlikely to happen, I have seen it). If possible I try and have all the ethernet switches etc together in one location, to minimise any "congested" cable links - ultimately once decorated in my house, I plan to have everything (modem, router, switches) all laid out under the stairs where the phone line comes in. |
