Default Major oil leak after oil change

Hi fellows,

I changed my oil this morning, and the oil filter. Used 6,5 litre.

After a few hundred kilometers says my car that the oil pressure is low. I opened the bonnet and everything, litterally everything is covered with oil. When revving it looks like the oil is squirting underneath the dynamo. Cant see where.

HELP PLEASE... what did i wrong.
Used the right oil, special for BMW diesels.

Thanks

I would check the rubber seal on the oil filter housing lid. I have nipped this seal when tightening and had similar problem. If not this check its not pushing up and out of dipstick tube. If not

Check your PCV filter as well.... (Search the forums for PCV, plenty of threads on this subject)

As above and make sure you haven't cross threaded oil filter cap

I had a wix filter supplied with an o ring that was too big for the groove in the filter cap, so it just rode up to the top of the filter when tightening it up. Lasted a few hundred miles then the o ring blew out and covered everything with oil.

Not to be the pessimist here, but the alternator only lasted a few weeks after that as well due to the soaking it got.

Also check that the O ring is fitted in the correct groove, and lubricate with fresh oil when replacing it.

Now for the important bit: After changing the oil clean any spillages around the filter housing and drain plug then run the engine for a few minutes at idle, and check that they remain oil tight.

Top advise from mike above sounds like the O-rings as been replaced in the wrong groove pics below, do not over tighten the oil filter as it will only twist the filter, also now check the that the alternator as not got damaged with oil, as it will soon burn out if it as.

Thanks guys,

Indeed... it was the b1O0dy O-ring :@... thight it to excactly 25NM as discribed. The O ring looks a bit too big but it's dry for the moment.

The oil warning came when i took a sharp turn. I filled it up with 3,2 litre and now is the oil level back to normal (almost on the max mark on the dipstick).

I'll leaving about two weeks for a journey to Prague, so I hope it will hold.

What make of filter did you buy? If it is a WIX it could be about 5mm too big which leaves it floppy in the groove. A genuine MGR one is a firm grip in the groove. If you are going on a long trip my advice would be to buy a genuine filter and swap that o ring to be sure.

After this happened to me i must admit i have been a bit paranoid about it, but for the cost of a filter it seemed safer.
