Domain and Web hosting providers?
I am after recommendations, how many of you host your own Domain and Web Site as I want to set one up
Is it a dog eat dog world out there? Any recommended sites where I can both register the Domains I want and host my site? I also would like pop3 mail addresses using the Domain name Not really something I had considered before but having ones own Domain name does not seem so expensive now. |

I use Uk Web Hosting UK (http://www.webhosting.uk.com/) They offer a .com or .co.uk domain circa £18-£30 per year for the basic package which includes POP3 account, various server-side scripting plus the option to buy extras for your chosen package without the need to upgrade to the next level, as it were.
I've had no problems with their product and the level of service they provide. They cater for individual requirements right through to corporate sites. I'd recommend them. Last edited by Simon; 29th December 2006 at 22:19.. |

Adding to the above, registering a domain name can be tricky but these people include that as part of their service. So, if a domain name is avaliable they will register it to you (rather than to them). I even have a proper paper certificate from the domain name register stating I own my site (donottumbledry.co.uk) outright. Which is pretty cool.

Nobody owns their domain name outright. It is yours only as long as you renew your subscription every 2 years as shown for your domain below. A domain name is always registered to the owner, not the host. Registered on: 13-Dec-2004 Renewal date: 13-Dec-2008 Last updated: 23-Nov-2006 Go here to retrieve the details of any domain name owner. http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp try the75andztclub.co.uk or any other |

To be more specific from my original post:- The domain name is registered on your (the users) behalf and in your name. It's yours so long as you pay for it (subscription kind of thing). The domain name is simply the URL of the IP number of the server where your site is hosted. You own the rights to the URL for as long as you pay subscription for it. The URL may point to a different IP (for example if your change hosting servers) but the URL will always point you in the right direction. GG - some crafty hosting company's have been known to own 'your' URL despite you registering it in your own name through their website. Not many around that do this thankfully. I think I got it right this time |

I wasn't nit picking Simon, just making sure you are aware of the legal rights afforded a registrant. Personally I think it's a bit of a cheek that we can only ever rent our domain names but that is the way of it.

I remember a friend of mine set up his own web host on his own PC. That was a kerfaffle and a half. And of course, everytime his PC was off-line the URL had to point to another server host. (PS.. don't try this at home, it's not very cost-effective and no one outside of the world of webdesign and network structuring will ever understand just how damned difficult it is to do! ) |
