The ZT with a Kenwood stereo uses infra-red for the steering wheel controls. The LED is on the end of a cable and should be clipped under the eyebrow so that it can be seen by the stereo, a common problem is that it has moved, or something on the shelf is blocking the view.

You can test the system by looking at the LED through a digital camera/phone camera while pressing the steereing wheel switches.

The remote wouldn't work when I fitted my kenwood to my car and it was down to the fact that the infra red thingy was poking out of the right hand side hole of the eye brow so just swapped it to the left hand hole and hey presto.
My first zt the remote wouldn't work though because one of the wires had broken off the infra red so had to join it back together.
Either of these could be your problem.

It's the curved bit of trim that sticks out above the stereo & shelf, the LED should be on the underside so it shines down onto the stereo.

Same head unit but cd in the 2.5
Looked in the 1.8 cable to cd changer is in the boot but not in the 2.5
Can I remove the cable out the 1.8 to fit in the 2.5
