My New CDT: diesel fumes smell
Might be imagining it but I keep thinking i can occasionally smell diesel (Exhaust) fumes inside my CDT. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to look at to investigate how this might be happening?!?!?!
Anyone had same thing happen? cheers Paul Last edited by tapped; 11th December 2007 at 10:34.. Reason: update text |

Hi mate...never come across this in my car, however I would be inclined to remove the rear seat squab and check the seals on the tank?....you are most likely to get more answers and suggestions from people tonight I suspect...

Thanks Guys
Sorry, I should have been clearer, i think this is exhaust fumes rather than the fuel itself. I could be wrong.....proper sniff req'd on the way home I do have the rear armrest down at present so will see if it improves with that back up, if so, i guess it coudl be comign in through the boot seal 'Course it could be the cars/trucks i'm following rather than the car itself |

Think a lot of CDT's suffer from this, mine included.
When I had smoke problems when I first bought the car I was able to see how the exhaust exited the car, my problem seems to be the tailpipe is fractionally too short as it leaves it traps behind the bumper and finds its way forward of the rear wheels. Mines worse obviously in traffic and when the passenger side window is open an inch or so Changed MAF sensor and cleaned PCV filter, EGR valve etc but didn't make a massive amount of difference to the smell but MPG did get better.

Try putting the cabin ventillation on re-circulation on the way home. If you then can't smell it, then you can assume it is coming in thro the fresh air vents. If it is still there, then there may be an exhaust leak finding it's way in.

I've just been tinkering with a car kit for the phone so I've had the under dash covers off. I found that the rarge rubber grommet around the steering wheel was loose. This meant I had a direct air connection between the cabin and the bottom rear of the engine.
free to check, so worth a try |

I'm aware that the fuel injection system can leak squirting diesel aerosol onto the manifold, not enough to drip onto the ground but enough to produce a smell which finds its way into the air system. I'm no expert and only passing on what was told to me from an ZT-T CDT owner

Me to
Hi Paul, as a new rover 75 owner I am a novice. I have just toured part of France. I found the fumes coming in when the Cab circulation came on. Please would you let me know of your outcome.

I had the same on mine. It was caused by a hold in the exhaust flexi.
