Default Air-Con Problem ??

Hi All, Wife as driving my 75 when there was a very loud screeching noise and a very bad smell of rubber burning, the air con was on, she pulled over and switched engine off, restarted ok but with air con switched off which i told her to do when she rang, the air con is now not cold when on, the compressor does engaged and the front fans do operate as well, do the compressors lock up inside , i been driving the car for a couple of weeks now trying to get the fault to return with air con off and on but will not lock up. Cheers from a very cold NZ

Sounds like something in the belt train seized up, causing the belt to slip and burn. Maybe the tensioner or jockey pulley or maybe the compressor. It sounds like whatever it was has released and is turning again. A lack of lubricant in the refrigeration system is bad for compressors and will cause severe damage. It needs a professional aircon look-over I'd say.

(It ain't so warm here either!)

Hi Derek,

I would check the auxiliary drive belt tension which is usually the cause of screeching noises. If the slippage is significant, you will lose cooling efficiency as you've described.

Thanks for the reply, i think the problem is the Air-con compressor as the air conditioning has not worked since the belt slipping and smell, i will fit a secondhand compressor when back off holiday, going to Phuket where its warm ****** freezing here in NZ, and back to Manchester for a couple of weeks(dont think i would get a compressor in my suitcase) ahhh Lancashire i hope its warm there.Cheers
