If you saw the latest Post Office advert...
.... in which they refer to the Post Office as 'an institution' and use the slogan 'The people's Post Office' may I encourage you all to get on to the ASA website and register your outrage at the crass arrogance of the organisation given that they are currently attempting to shut thousands of much-needed POs across the country? I am incensed!

I saw this advert a few minutes ago & immediately thaught it would provoke discussion! A quick PR attempt I guess after the recent issues.

An old friend of mine works for them, started as a postie and worked his way up to management. I saw him last week and his comments about the workforce at the sorting office he's based at weren't particularly nice to say the least. Words such as ignorant, lazy and incompetent were some of the printable ones I can use here. But he is concerned about his pension too, and he's seething at the post office closures programme. Basically his attitude is that the current Government has gone way further than even Thatcher would have dared and they've engineered to cripple a perfectly good public service so that the likes of TNT can grasp more money.

But the Royal Mail still have to deliver TNT and others letters at a loss, on Government orders and let others cherry pick what to cover.
They charge less per letter to deliver by Government imposed rules than we can buy a 2nd class stamp for. Not supporting them but it should be fair always and if TNT and others want to deliver letters and take your money let them do it with their Postmen/women at a correct price! |

It should be remembered that the 'Post Office' is a completely different entity to 'Royal Mail'.

I'll attempt to get the structure right if I can. I could do with my old mucker here but seeing as he's at work and I've lost his mobile number again that's not very possible
Royal Mail is a plc but it is owned by the Government. If you remember there was a lot of talk about it being privatised but it didn't happen for a variety of reasons, mainly political. Royal Mail did change it's name to Consignia for a short time but the kickback against this re-branding ensured that the old name returned pretty smartish. Post Office Limited - which operates the retail outlets - is a subsidiary of Royal Mail group and therefore is not a completely different entity as suggested above; it is not independent of Royal Mail. |
