Default AM problems

Hi
As we all know AM is in its final lap as it were, but, can anyone help. AM is always a bit hit and miss but when i pass electric pylons the signal breaks up badly, my unit is 8 years old but the AM on my wifes 5 year old Aygo hardly has any interference at that the same point, its only a relativly cheap Panasonic unit does anyone know how i can rectify this.
thanks in anticipation
Gary

Different units have different idiosyncrisies.

In general terms, the more modern a unit and the more expensive it is, the better the filtering on it. You'll notice this on FM when going into poor signal area, new and manufacturer installed units will "mono" themselves, eliminating the stereo hiss and interference. The radio is basically filtering out higher frequencies and the stereo pilot frequency so that you can keep listening without problems (albeit in MONO).

With AM - filtering is even more important. If you had a Mini in the 70s and 80s, you'll know about supressors. You were wise to fit some supression to reduce engine interference with the radio. These days not only are car electronics better, but so are radio's. That said, BECAUSE AM is on "its last lap" manufacturers care less and less for making a good all round set.

As I say - each set is different. But you'll normally find a radio that gets a bit of electric interference underneath pylons is the radio that gets a better signal when the going's good. Other sets can be a bit "deaf" which is why they don't suffer.

I have two cars - the Ford 6000CD in my focus is an absolute crock on AM. And it's deaf on AM. Totally. But the Kenwood I have in the 75 is amazing on both. Best unit/car combo i've ever had.

Good luck.
