It's odd how she won't lie down. Maggie did this, Maggie did that. One thing she didn't do, but never gets credit for it, is invent Right to Buy.

Students, no, even casual observers, of history know that that beacon of modesty Harold Wilson (Labour don't you know) moved that in 1959 in his manifesto. Unfortunately he lost the election so we had to wait until Margaret got the no.10 keys in 1979. Even she wasn't the architect because in 1970 some 7000 council houses were sold to their tenants! That massively increased during the intervening years until 1979 when at last the Left had a target at which to direct their dogmatic venom. And a woman at that!

Landlords charging unreasonable rents? No they don't! They charge whatever the market will stand as any other business does! Don't blame independent landlords for charging the Housing Benefit limit for the respective area, blame the benefits system for keeping the limit so high!

Again, sweeping generalisations get jumped on as perfect examples whenever it suits and wilful ignorance ensues. Never mind what actually happened, don't worry about constructing an argument that contains only truths, spin to suit the circs and then blame those awful politicians for lying!
I think you will find that tenants in privately rented accommodation have to subsidies a fair portion of their rent of their allowance on top of the housing benefit now days. And I am talking small self contained rooms. since house prices shot up.

As a Lib Dem MEP I have been asked many questions over the years working in Europe. Now the only question I'm asked is:
Have you done any work paid or unpaid since you last signed on?

I was aware of that Jay. My point was that private landlords are in business just as much as plumbers or garages. They will maximise profits to whatever level they can get. So the problem is not the landlord, it's the system.

Private rents should be at a level that is 'fair' in a similar way to council rents. The property market, being skewed the way it is, confers great benefits to those that can afford to dabble in it. The market is responsible for great gains as well as causing much of the grief we see concerning repossessions, evictions, a twisted benefits system that always penalises those who need the most help.

Nobody wants to go back to the days of rigid rent controls but it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to devise a fairer and more compassionate society. Profit, legal profit that is, (as opposed to tax evasion) is what oils the wheels for the human condition. Greed is the brake. The 'devil take the hindmost' option is not nice.

There are lots of new skills for Lib Dem ex MEP's to use...
Phrases like..

"ice and lemon sir?"
or
"would you like fries with that?"
or the old favourite
"can I supersize you today?"

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
