Good news,I've just been into the garage and tried it again and all gears now go into position very easily with the engine running.Ive only reversed it out of the garage and back in again so far but it was fine apart from some brake squeel,so looks like they will need a little freeing off as well.Be a good excuse for a blast into the Peak District over the weekend

I haven't done anything apart from leaving it 24 hours so I'm thinking Mark's suggestion in post #6 probably helped and just needed a little time to work. Thanks Mark

It's been a bit of a harsh lesson but I will make sure in future that it is not only started regularly but also moved when on Sorn. Thanks to those who offered advice, much appreciated.

Thanks Mark,I put 80 miles on it today around the Twisties and hills of the Peak District. No problems with gear shift and brakes soon loosened up.AC blew nice and cold soin general very happy for saying it's not moved for 6 months.Lesson learned about that

Passed it's MOT this morning with 2 small advisory 's, 2 brake pipes corroded/covered in grease.

I've owned the car from less than a year old, buying it direct from Rover. The thing I wanted to mention though is that from day one there has,on many occasions, been some grinding of gears when selecting reverse. However since carrying out the procedure recommended by sworks (Mark) in post #6 I no longer get any grinding into reverse and all gears select easier than ever before. One to remember I think and try if you are having similar issues.
