There are a number of kits of 94 pieces for around £34 on ebay, but not sure of their quality.
Is it this one

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324157926468

This is the only 50ish piece powerfix kit I can see. If it is, I suspect the £80 price is actually for the one I have (as that is roughly what they cost). It may be worth asking a staff member if you were back to the store.

EDIT: the one I have linked to, is actually the 'specialist' (their words) socket set. Apparently it is designed to fit onto worn nuts and bolts. Not a full on replacement for an Irwin bolt remover set, but can help. Works as a normal socket set too, but I wouldnt use it unless I was stuck.

THIS is the specific one I have and referred to (but better images). But it was £79.99 in Lidl, the newer version does come up from time to time.

Basic tool kit?

Isn’t that Gaffer Tape for if it moves but shouldn’t, and

WD40 for if it doesn’t move and should?

(Plus mobile phone and RAC card, of course)

Best socket set I've had just add various bits to it as you need them, ie, torx bits etc https://www.amazon.co.uk/Teng-M3812N...2334138&sr=8-9

Thanks for all the advice, but if I'm honest, nothing really floated my boat.

I'm going to go for this one from Amazon, simply because it has nearly all 5* reviews:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...4BQ2I36T&psc=1

I wasn't sure that I would really make good use of it, but then it would probably cost me £50 just to get some simple jobs like fitting a filter or two done, so should be a worthwhile investment. Well - that's my justification for spending the money!

Well it looks good enough to my diy eyes. It does look like the up to date equivalent to my own, and if it is, I reckon it will be up to most jobs you will need to tackle.as suzublu says, you can add to it as the need arises.

If you have a diesel get a 36mm low profile socket also (I think it is 36mm) for the filter housing.

Excuse my ignorance, but which filter housing are you talking about?

Oil filter with the extensions on that, it will do the air filter housing on the diesel too.

Only diesel.

In the end, I decided that the need for a top quality socket set was perhaps a bit of an indulgence, so I saved myself £17 and bought this one instead:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Moss-94PC...72.m2749.l2648

Arrived today, excellent delivery time, seems adequate for my needs...but then, as an absolute amateur, how would I know!

I tried to tell a 'manager' at LIDL's that their 54 piece socket set was way over-priced (at £80), but the lady would only say that's the price, it is not a mistake...I had to insist that yes it was a mistake, but could see I was up against inherent jobsworthiness, so to stop me getting more insistent and her more entrenched, I just asked her to have it checked, and walked away. No good deed goes unpunished!

I'm guessing my tool set will prove just fine for me...
