engine noise on cdt
I just discovered this morning a light clicking/ticking noise coming from bottom rear area of engine, crank pulley end, noticeable when standing next to car at idling speed, doesn't get louder when the revs are increased, but doesn't go away either. Should I be concerned? Its loudest just behind the front wheel,ie between the wheel and the driver's door. 02 reg 88k miles

Yes you should be concerned - it could be the crank pulley starting to come apart. It is damped and the rubber can split. Worse case scenario is it comes aff all together and damages other parts of the engine so don't delay in getting it checked out, just to be on the safe side.

Good question. Some owners have sprayed a bit of water on the pulley at idle, and if the noise disappears then it is on its way out. Recently changed my serpentine belt and with it off I could see my pulley had no splits in the bit of rubber visible between the two parts and I couldn't feel any play in it.
Of course the inner wheel arch liner has to come off to get to the belt. And if you want to change the pulley it is bolted up well tight. Mike |

looks like that is the problem, sprayed some water from underneath, the clicking stopped, and turned into more of a hiss, with the water.
