Default Genealogy websites?

Hi

Can anyone give me any advice on the best internet genealogy site to join. I have looked at a few and the ancestry.co.uk looks about the best to me at £83 a year. There are some that are cheaper but not sure if they would be any good.

Is there anyone who have used these sites to any success? I do realise leg work is also needed so I am only thinking of using the site for the basics and getting back as far as I can before the hard work starts.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Genes reunited is quite good and has a nice family tree display, but your quite right and once you have picked up the basics you will have no need for the site as after a certain period you will have to go and look at some records in person. I got our family back to the 1700's so far, Boxmoor based sailmakers don't you know! And one of my great great great....etc grandfathers is buried upside down at a cross roads as a convicted highwayman!

family tree maker has been the market leader for the last 20odd years so I'd probably start with that. It also links to other sites and is quite easy to use.

Also you can purchase older versions of the software for pense on eBay to see if you like it first. I used to give copied away with purchases as I accidentally bought 2000 copies in an auction.

Just had a look and it looks like www.ancestry.co.uk and the family tree maker software are now the same thing.

I remember with the old version of the software it automatically linked to hundreds of websites worldwide both financially linked to the Mormons and independent sites.

Does the software still do that or do you now have to pay for what was once free?

Hi Ken,
we spent the day just up the road in The National Archives at Kew,well worth a visit.

In a similar vein, did you see "Who do you think you are" last night,Kate Humble....I thought it would be another celib ego trip...how wrong, it was fascinating.Thats the thing about tracing your roots, you have no idea of what happened many years ago.

One of the best so far even the the wife remained awake while she normally sits there snoring (not nice) I have just joined ancestry on the 14 day trial and I put in myself, parents and grandparents, a green leaf came on the page and it automatically filled in two other generations from another tree! It looks like an off shoot from someone else doing the same

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and thanks for the offer Phil

i have spent hours looking up ancestors on, "jesuschristlatterdaysaints" website. try familysearch .org.
traced my ancestors back to 1760 and ours is not a common name. not many in the phone book.

i had a look on the "old bailey" web site and found that a relative of mine had owned a coal yard in london. two dishonest "gentelmen" had been convicted of "pinching" 24 stone of coal from him. one was deported, the other was put in nick.
pity they dont do that to the "gentelmen" today.
