Bad news.
The legend Johnny Johnson has left us, the last of the UK Dambusters.

It is with heavy heart that we have learnt that Johnny Johnson passed away peacefully in his sleep tonight with his family. It was for him and his colleagues we started Save Scampton in 2018, as he said "Close RAF Scampton Never, never, never" Blue skies Sir we fight on for you.

That's sad news, a gent! His crew had to go round ten times to get their run right in the dams raid. What with that and his work in teaching after his R.A.F. service he has inspired so many. Passing after his 101st birthday he certainly has been an achiever. R.I.P. Johnny.

The term hero has little value today, bandied around too often but he was a true hero, a were all those who took part in the dams raids.
When I was in the Air Cadets (many years ago!) summer camp one year was at Scampton. |

He was always so engaging to listen to,so modest yet a steely determination in his words.
As Steve said,he embodied the true meaning of the word hero. And most importantly he lived a long life to tell the tale.

A very sad 'milestone' indeed. They definitely were made of different stuff in the 40's, going up mission after mission in the certain knowledge that the odds of returning were substantially less than evens took a good deal of character and yes, bravery.
A life well lived, RIP |

Just watched a report about him on the local TV news.He became a school teacher in Newark Notts after the war and last revisited the school in 2017 where he received a rousing reception from the children.
