Tick is back plus sludge
Hi Everyone,
About a month ago my kv6 was ticking on start up after an oil change it went away yesterday the tick came back went to check the oil and the top of the engine where you can see from the oil cap was full of sludge I know KV6s tend to sludge up on short journeys but it's done less than 1k miles since the last oil change not only on short journeys and the amount of sludge was exesive which makes me wonder what's going on coolant is crystal clear though and there is no sign of bubbling or anything coming from it perhaps I've got a failing oil cooler but then again ive been told that if it was that I would see the oil level increase dramatically which it hasn't. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance, Thanos |

Can you be more specific about the sort of ticking and where it's coming from?
Rapid ticking from somewhere around the middle could be tappets. Slower ticking from the N/S could be fuel purge valve. More of a rattling sound could be your upper inlet manifold chamber on the way out.

Engine breather blocked ??---
It's got to be getting moisture from somewhere to form the sludge. |

I've changed the breather pipes so it can't be blocked unless there is something I'm missing problem is I've got a leaky thermostat so I can't really tell if its using coolant or not but I've just had a new one delivered which should give some answers

The pressure from the oil pump might also have improved a little with the thicker oil.- |

I think you're probably right Thanos. I can't enlarge the 'thumbnail' style pictures but it looks really horrible in there.
The usual diagnostic technique is to by-pass the cooler temporarily and flush the cooling system repeatedly. MGJohn reports good results on his 1.8 engines with Holts Speedflush remaining in the system for a short time. Hopefully this check will confirm our suspicions and you can then order a replacement cooler. Simon

How many miles has the engine done ? You mention changing the breather pipes but have you changed or cleaned the mesh filters in the cam covers ?
( no. 14 on here https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001711 ) They can be blocked solid at high mileage .
