Default CDTI randomly shutting down?

Hi guys,

I'm facing a very strange problem.
My 75 Tourer CDTI is randomly shutting down, without apparent reason.

I am driving normally, and it stops from accelerating and dropping the rpms, like if I was without fuel, and once I press the clutch, the engine goes off.

Then, I turn the key again for start, and it goes again, like if it was nothing.

First time it happened, I didn't give attention since I though it was a random error. But this is the 4th time happening, in the space of 1 or 2 months.

I think I have no errors or engine lights coming on, so have no idea what could be happening.

Does anyone has experienced something like the situation here described?

Regards

First thing to check is that the plenum drains are clear and the ECM hasn't gone for a swim.

If the cutting out is when you are accelerating, then it could be down to injector leakback, but before you test for that check and clean the HP fuel pressure sensor plug connections - it sits on the end of the common fuel rail, and the HP fuel pressure regulator plug connections - that sits on the end of the HP fuel pump.

Yes this happens when I am accelerating, and then I feel that kick and the rpms dropping, I keep trying to accelerate kicking the pedal but does not work, just like when you run out of fuel.

Additionally, it also happened one time while I was braking very hard.
I was braking and when the car stopped, it went off.

One piece of advise I had many years ago from a Diesel Engineer, was if any problems, first change fuel filter for a new one. I had problems with engine not running properly on my Diesel Land Rover and I took it in to be checked. First thing he did was to change the filter, I complained that I had only been changed the previous week. He opened it up and it was black with rubbish. Problem solved and a lesson learnt.

Supposedly I changed the fuel filter 6 months ago... I think that it will be very unlikely that this could be the reason for this problem...

Worth checking to see if your ECU has been "drowned" in the Plenum chamber - if the ECU has been soaked it will scramble your engine sensors readings leading to unexplained engine cut out. Diesels are vulnerable to this as the ECU is not water proofed - unlike petrol versions. So worth checking to see if it is dry or not.

Had the same symptoms with my kv6 petrol. Found it was a faulty crank angle sensor. Once Ireplaced it I haven't had a problem since.

A member local to me had the same symptoms that turned out to be caused by a leaking HP fuel pump.
