Inspired by the picture of a very gungy EGR valve, I took the one off our 131CDTi that has covered 40,000 miles since new, and discovered that was very gungy too. A horrid sticky black sludge - recommend gloves. Well I zealously cleaned it and that made me feel better, but I can't detect any changes in the performance or mpg, but cleaning the valve does not clean the inlet manifold which has a much greater surface area. Whether replacing the EGR valve will gradually clean out the manifold as well -who knows?
MOT due on Friday - I'll see whether there is any problem with the emissions and give the car an Italian tune up tonight. |

Cleaned my EGR valve about 6 weeks ago. Boy was it gunged up!! Had cleaned it back in May '08 (when my troubles started in Southampton). Now taken it off last week, and put on the EGR by-pass on. Still evaluating.....
How did the MoT go Geoff?

Sorry, Steve, Yes one of the things to look at, among many things to do. But, with my history with the car, it's pretty well one mod at a time
