Bad sector repair
Hi on my server ( whs 2011) my smart program has reported a damaged sector and gives the option to try and repair it, now tried this a couple of times but I keep giving up on it after a good few hours of it running, looks like it might need a day or more.
So is this right could it take that long to run the repair program ( stablebit scanner) ? Thanks

Back everything up, (if not already - which it should be on a server) and plan to replace the disk before it fails completely. Just my tuppence. Anyway enough work type stuff - I'm off to read about cars....

It can take a long time to repair sectors, depending where they are on the physical drive, and what data is involved, and how badly damaged it is.
First things first - get everything backed up elsewhere. Then I'd leave Stablebit running overnight to see if it fixes anything. Failing that - SpinRite can normally fix just about anything and has brought a drive or two of mine back from the dead! |

Bad sectors should be marked as bad and left unused by the disk (fault with the disk): some bad sectors may be data corruption maybe due to a bad shutdown of the system in which case data from a bad sector might be able to be repaired However as a sector is actually quite small repairing the data in a bad sector due to data corruption should be fairly quick. If it's not then I'd suggest it's a disk fault in which case I'll stand by what I said earlier - plan on replacing the disk before you lose data.
In the past (1995,98) bad sectors were common on disks - even from new. These days modern disks are much more robust so physical drive errors like this are a lot less common, and often indicate the start of a much larger problem (but not always). Be safe and keep you data backed up onto another drive. And be plan for a disk replacement should the current disk fail.
