I hope in the future to get a small array of solar panels and batteries and have that as a stand by grid for in case of power cuts. At the moment I have thermocouples and batteries linked to every radiator in my house which when placed in the purpose built charging dock can charge a phone or e cig a couple of times (during the winter months). I also have a diesel generator which can provide power if needed, but is loud and I don't think the neighbours would like it. I haven't experienced a power cut for donkey's years here as the grid at this end is quite good and blips don't bother me as I have UPS on my computer which lets me do a safe shut down or run for a while until I save things up.
I have virgin broadband and I know that if the power goes off so does it unfortunately. But the telephone exchange I'm not sure if they would still have power but they might. but it would only be a few milli amps of power not enough to charge a phone off. last time I checked at my moms house the voltage from the line was around 3v, I guess you could hook it up to a battery and step it up, but its a bad power source.
