You mean it dropped to the 'off' position? If so, the sensor signal was lost and this tripped on the emergency cooling fan. Presumably it was just a temporary loss of contact. I'd suggest the sensor contacts should be checked/cleaned.

Here's a photo. It's on the RHS of the head as you look at it.



Pull off the connector (fiddly) and clean everything up.

you say 6 o/clock not 12 so gauge went down to zero ,you have not said anything about over heating yes you need the gold resistor .i would say the temp sensor is playing up and lost the signal, as it had no reading from the gauge the ecu put the fan on .

I've cleaned the temp sensor and all seems fine. Thanks for all yr advice. I'll keep a close eye on things.
