Default May I ask a Renault question?

I'll assume yes.

My wife's W-Reg Clio mk 2 has an intermittant speedo, and will often start to work if driven over a bump/pothole.

I don't even know if it is cable or electronic, and I put a post on the Clio equivalent of this site, and "bumped" it several times, but no response whatever.

Apart from the obvious, ie buy a Haynes for it, anyone any ideas please?

Thanks in advance

Malcolm

I can't find much on this but it would appear its a known fault with the cable, what the fault is I have no idea sorry

I'd have thought at that age it'll be electric, it souds to me like a faulty speedometer (clocks) if you get it to do it as you are driving along and they aren't registering, look at the milage and see if that is still counting when the needle is registering zero, if still going up then it has to be the clocks at fault, as you are moving and the needle is at zero, give the gauges a little knock and see if it suddenly shoots up.
My old ZR used to do this on cold mornings, I think that the needle was pushed on to far and was catching on the bit behind the needle.

A friend of mine had the same problem on his fiesta. His dad being a mechanic decided to replace the cable and a few of the other related parts, but the problem didn't go away. I last heard something about there being a problem inside the gearbox as all the other mechanical parts were working.

This kind of problem isn't easily identified and different mechanics will say its something different.
