In my '75, a nice lady tells me 'you are over the speed limit' whenever I exceed the limit for any give road (and no, it's not my wife!).

I have an audible warning alert which emits a pulsating bleep as one approaches the speed limit: 20/30/40/50/70. Drive a tad over and a terribly loud and horrible screaming noise deafens the ears and jars me into lowering the speed limit to escape those cries. The alert is on one of the Radio Guys new MGR units. I find it is useful. But it could be annoying to someone else. Even though the limiter on the White Van Man is set to 62 mph, he can still manage to drive in a hurry. In the long term I am wondering if it is detrimental to a high powered cars performance like the ZT in not being able to have a good burn if the limiter comes into law?

Someone mentioned this technology being dangerous. This isn't the first time this idea has sprung up. When it was first trialed studies showed it was MORE DANGEROUS to have it fitted.

There was one reason for this, automation. If the car was fitted with an auto gearbox, the driver bearly has to think about driving because the driver can sit with their foot planted to the boards knowing they will do the speed limit everywhere. Something less to think about so driver becomes less attached to actually driving.

Mr clarkson in his great wisdom actually once said something clever

Driving should be much harder because you'd have to concentrate that much more on it. The more you take away from drivers the more accidents are going to happen. Until of course it is universally automated.

Have that too, unless yours is sat nave dependant, mines on a front camera, the lane departure warning works fairly well but not all speed signs are recognised.

this is a very good point, people have enough distractions from driving so to not have to worry about breaking speed limits is going to allow their minds to wander even more, also Clarkson does talk a lot of sense at times, no one listens to him however due to most of the time he talks ****

Yes, attaention could be affected.

A (sort-of) related point, a friend of mine once said, and so too latterly did Richard Hammond, that people would drive much more carefully if instead of the steering wheel having an airbag, it has a huge metal spike..........

Lorries, buses and coaches have speed limiters already.

An interesting thread.

Personally I cant see the problem with having one fitted if it becomes law. As I see it though that is a mighty big if.
Just think though, no need to worry about being caught speeding
