Driver's door lock.....again!

Belated New Year greetings to one and all.

I spent a sizeable chunk of the weekend trawling this forum. Do you know there are nearly 57,000 threads hereon? I eventually arrived at https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=91188 with which I have similar symptoms; key turns in lock with no discernible effect, save that the little red light on the dash flickers. In my case, however, the lock has never been removed in my sixteen years of ownership. Looking at the photos in the link, the white deposit on the operating rod with star-shaped ends implies a mazak or similar casting/moulding. I fear, therefore, that the rod has failed, possibly due to corrosion, wear or the dreaded zinc alloy fatigue. (like old Dinky Toys). Do the experts think that is likely? If not, what are the other possibilities? I think Item 19 on https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001786 is the rod in question, but would appreciate confirmation. At that price its worth buying one anyway.

I realise that whatever the outcome, the door card will have to be removed, but I haven't a clue how to go about it. The 'How-to' at https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=169384 has all the photos obliterated by overlaid trade marks. Is there any way of rendering those illustrations legible?

Thanks in anticipation of the usual unstinted guidance and help.:}

Mac-rouser is still about. Maybe a PM to him might help you.--

Thanks, Colvert, for this intelligence. I have PM'd a request to the said gent .

Having ordered a #19 rod from Rimmer Bros, I have been looking more objectively at the photos Arctic posted of the relevant mechanism. What is enclosed in the black, banana-shaped element that dangles from the handle frame and receives, at the remote extremity, one end of the #19 rod? How is rotation of the key transferred to the latch, gears, eccentrics or, worse, a belt? Failure therein might be the culprit for my problem. Can anyone enlighten me, please?

Thanks in anticipation,

Derek.

It's more ;likely to be the cable that connects to the bone bar, it is hidden inside the black housing in picture 2 here and loops around top and bottom.

if not that then the back of the lock is a known failure point

Ooh 'eck! What an abomination!

Rimmers don't even mention this interior cable and the whole contraption, at a price, is out of stock. I haven't located an 'ebay artisan' offering such cables, and I don't fancy buying a 'wrecker' part because the cable in that could be on the verge of failure, Looks like I shall have to be cautious about using the car to avoid the risk of failure in an electical component of the locking system until Rimmers restock.

Has anyone identified a purveyor of that wretched cable?

Thanks in anticipation of further thoughts,

Derek.

Doh! Just noticed that Rimmers are only quoting the item for LHD. Not much use to me! Just a thought; is the cable/housing common to both LHD and RHD? If yes, that would a reliable if expensive way forward.

Try your local cycle shop - they may be able to make something up for you.

Thanks for the thought, Mike Noc. Did you do that to retrieve the one you illustrated? I should be adjacent to such an emporium tomorrow. I'll pose the question.

I tried the cycle shop I had in mind - Old School establishment and a very knowledgeable proprietor, but no luck. Apparently they can't source the ends.

Looks like I'll have to try and locate a scrapper who is prepared to check the condition of the cable before sale. What are the odds on that, I wonder!

Any suggestions welcome.

To be fair Derek, they look like standard barrel nipple brake cable ends, I utilised a pushbike brake cable in lieu of a bonnet release cable as I was reticent to pay £26 for one, as well as wanting the car fixed ASAP

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Jr0AA...-F/s-l1600.jpg

The total cost of the repair was a staggering £3.65 from the local bike shop, and a little time spent
