Default DD Nav

I am in the process of replacing my old radio for one of Sean's DD navs and so far I got it up and running except for the steeringwheel controls. How can I tell wether they are infrared or direct wired. I had a DD connection in the car so no adapter needed and I plugged the original loom straight into the NAV , same for the speakers connectors. When I get to the set-up menu for steering and I press the controls on the steeringwheel it says "no signal found" Can anyone help me out here?
Rob.
