Diesel Particulate Filter Retrofit
Hi everyone,
I'll need to drive in Berlin over the next couple of months. One of the requirements there is for all cars (even foreign registered ones) to meet stringent emissions standards, which for every diesel car registered before 2006 means the presence of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). I have a 2002 75 Tourer CDT, and I understand that these cars don't have a DPF. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to have one retrofitted here in the UK? I've always found anything car-related to be much, much more expensive in Germany, so I'd like to find out what the situation is here. The going rate over there seems to be around £1k all in. You can't just retro fit a particulate filter If the car has never had one. The DPF is controlled by the ecu to regenerate at certain intervals. Maybe fit a new cat if you are worried. Any way you car was manufactured before 2006 so I wouldn't worry.

I've never heard of a company in the UK retrofitting them - only removing or occasionally repairing them!
I think that you'll find it easier getting it done over there. |

I would be very surprised if it was possible plus like others have said your car predates 2006 so you are not required to have one.

Sorry - I made a typo in the original post! As I understand things, the retrofit is required because the car was manufactured and registered before 2006. Perhaps this is something that simply isn't available here because of a lack of need? Thanks, Ashley |

It seems that a DPF is definitely what's required as an upgrade...
The problem is that I need a special type of green sticker to display in my windscreen which proves that the car meets the required levels, and these stickers are only issued with proof of the levels being met. Otherwise you're not allowed to drive in Berlin (and many other German cities) even as a visitor. The police are quite hot on the issue (and it's easy to check with cars being parked up in cities) and the fine is €40 and one driving licence point for every day of violation. It quickly mounts up. It'd be great to get it done here if at all possible so that I can drive in Germany straight away (and hopefully make a cost saving as well). I may just have to resign myself to shelling out the £1k and having it done over there though...or buying another cheap run-around with all of this already done. Sorry for the run of posts, but I've just seen that there's a similar low emissions zone in London for large vehicles. Does anyone know of companies that provide DPF retrofits for these vehicles that might be able to help on a smaller car?

I really can't see how a DPF could be retrofitted to our cars to be honest. They're more trouble than they're worth so if you can get away without, you'll be far better off. Are you absolutely certain one is compulsory for cars manufactured up to 2006 ? I've taken a quick look around & it's not exactly clearly explained from what i've read ! |

If it is mandatory for a diesel car registered before 2006 to have a Dpf fitted then I think there are two very simple solutions.
1, buy a car which has a Dpf fitted. 2, buy a petrol car. I simply cannot believe that every diesel car which drives through Berlin has a Dpf fitted regardless of age.
