David.
Top up the tank to the required level run the car then look under to see if the bottom hose as sprung a leak, also check the Y section where the hose was fitted as these can be brittle and leak after fitting an inline stat, when you have fitted a inline stat it is always best to give the car a run so the stat can open up properly.

This should have been done before leaving the Nano, by yourself or with someone with you then returned to Nano for car to be left on tick over for at least 20 minutes.

I doubt you have done any damage to the car but the leak needs to be found asap, do not drive it until you have.

David,

In your profile, where it says: "Rover 75 Saloon", please can you delete "Saloon" and insert the engine type which you've helpfully given above? This will ensure that technical advice given is prompt and accurate. Many thanks.

Simon

Do those engines have core plugs, just a though. I reckon Ive exhausted the "defective coolant cap" issue. Best of luck I feel for you, been there, etcetc. Chris S.

Problem solved.

The replacement pipe had slipped it's jubilee clip and come loose. Refitted the pipe, re-tightened the clip and ran the engine up to temperature (after refilling the coolant) and all was well.

On a side note, i did have to keep tightening the coolant cap as the engine warmed up? Once it reached the correct temperature it no longer worked loose.

That's always a great result an easy fix for a spine shuddering problem lol.

I reckon you have the fear that I had when I first got the car. The coolant cap went tightish and I feared tightening further for breaking the tank. Tighten further until it stops turning. The caps are pressure rated, so need to be very tight. One evening I came home from work with that unmistakable smell of hot coolant - my spine shuddered in fear. But it was the cap not on tight enough from checking fluids the day before and was spitting out coolant. Another full turn and all was fine.

Glad you found out what had caused the leak Scott. Let’s hope as you say, no damage done.

I have smelt coolent a few times on my car since I have performed the thermostat mod.
But I haven't found any leak or the source of the smell.
Definitely coolant smell though.
So, perhaps this is down to the filler cap?
It is very tight when I screw it on, it doesn't feel " happy " and I am reluctant to give it the strong arm treatment in case I break something!!

Is the coolant cap something that gives trouble?

It can do, and also the thermostat housing and radiator top hose connection where it enters the cylinder head are common leak points - the original silicone rubber perishes over time if soaked in OAT.

Usually not the cap but the O rings can get tired. If replacing use Viton ones, better.
