Another key question re VIN
If you buy a new key from a Rover parts supply place, they ask for the VIN. I'm confused as to the relevance of the VIN as the key needs to be programmed anyway? My only thought this is for the remote locking capability, and that only a certain 'series' of remotes work with a particular car?

Also a key supplied to VIN will be pre cut to fit the original locks. I did the opposite and had a new steering column lock supplied manufactured to VIN and saved having separate keys.
