reading the link provided for the circa 800k cars to be affected

“Whilst some of the cars incompatible with E10 fuel will be historic models, many will be old but serviceable everyday run-arounds that people on a tight travel budget rely on to get about.

“The good news is both that the vast majority of cars on our roads are able to run on E10 and that Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has recognised the need to protect the users of those older vehicles which are not E10 compatible.

“It will be interesting to see whether the current consultation generates support for the Government’s proposed way forward.”

The DfT is proposing that if they choose to offer E10 petrol larger filling stations must also sell standard E5 to allow drivers of older vehicles to fuel their cars.


so at least for the next five to ten years or so, diesels wont be affected, but petrol engined cars should at least have an availability of E5. With the target ban on new ICE cars as 2040 (although this has been suggested to be 2032), and an outright ban on the roads by 2050! I think the problem will be finding a fuel station to fill up with!

In saying that, when ICE cars become a specialised hobby, I think I will be pushing up daisies.

I have used E10 in my cars when I have been abroad and I have not noticed any difference. Some say they don't start as well and apparently vapour locks in the fuel pipes are more common as it has a lower boiling point.

The big problem with Ethanol is that is corrosive to some parts used in older vehicles, I am sure I have read it can destroy the rubber in some types of fuel pumps and brass in the float bowls of cars with carbs.

At 5% and 10% I would not worry to much but if it becomes more than this you might need to replace parts in the fuel system.

why on earth did they not just add the new symbols to the Diesel label and to the unleaded label. why change and do away with the unleaded and diesel labels.

next, some 2numpty" will suggest making diesel nossels Red, the old 4 start colour.

I'm so much wiser seeing the new labels.....not

Unfortunately fuel is being messed about with for both petrol and diesel cars.

This will be a bit controversial, but the old 4 star leaded fuel, the actual 98 octane not the watered down 97 octane, produced more power, more mpg than the later fuel.
Yes it contained lead. Yes lead isnt any good for anyone, but, you could travel further for less fuel, plus, outside of the combustion chamber, ironically it is less combustible in atmospheric conditions.

Now, unleaded, less octane, less mpg, less power, but more combustable in atmospheric conditions.

So anyone unfortunate to be involved in a crash with resulted in a ruptured fuel tank or fuel line would be more at risk from a fire than with good old fashioned 4 star fuel.

Dont get me started on "super unleaded" with loads of extra added Benzine!!!!

So, how to make petrol worse?

Add ethanol.
Which will produce less CO2 when burnt, have a lower octane value, be corrosive to plastic and rubber, give less power, less MPG, "phase shift" and actually become water if left in a fuel tank for any length of time, the list goes on.

And diesel?

I'm running to catch up on what you actually buy from the pumps, but corn oil does not make an engine last anywhere near as long as what it used to, it clogs injectors, it causes premature failure of fuel pumps. Etc, etc.
Just look at the carbon build up when you remove an EGR valve and / or inlet manifold!

But at least ( we are told ) that we are doing our bit for the environment. We can sit at home with our special light bulbs and our bag for life , safe in the "fact" we are doing our bit, and not dumping plastics into the ocean, our cars are more "friendly" to the environment,

Sorry, this may have turned into a bit of a rant, I didnt intend it to.

Once E10 and E15 are introduced, can we really believe that lower ethanol fuels will remain available for older cars? Remember the phasing out of leaded petrol when we were promised a similar facility? The availability of leaded fuel did not last very long!

On top of all the valid and interesting points above, may I add the enormous damage that the production of biofuels does to the environment. Orangutans losing their habitats as just one example!

Biofuel production also negatively impacts poor indigenous peoples who farm and live on land that now gets used for biofuel crops rather than foodstuffs.

If crops are grown for us in developed countries so we can feel self righteous about “doing our bit for the planet” - think about those who incur far higher food prices than they can afford because the biomass they used to eat or their farm animals used to eat now gets used in our fuel tanks so that we can drive to work, go shopping and our government can take about 70% of the fuel cost as tax!

I’m not a fan of biofuels - it’s a sop to the silly by the terminally stupid.

There seems to be confusion here.
I fully agree only with that assumption regarding Biodiesel produced in the far East from palm oil.

Regarding the bioethanol E85 fuelling petrol cars, in France it's only produced from sugar beet coming from the mainland (Northern France) and does absolutely no harm to other growing areas, so tiny are the surfaces involved in the process. And mind that even with a huge increase of E85 consumption in France this year, we are still exporting our surplus so far. Hence we are self-sufficient.
