MOT "abandoned"
Took the Rover 1999 Rover200 - 1600GTi for its mot on Wednesday last, just a formality really, well maintained, serviced etc always subject to weekly checks particular reference to coolant level. Returned to be told the car had lost all its coolant via the pressure cap whilst being run to do emission checks. The next sentence was "its the head gasket they all do that on the K series engines, they are known for it" Got it topped up with water at the MOT station and drove it home, He may or may not be correct about headgasket, I doubt it on the basis it has never shown any signs and always had the coolant level monitored. Tomorrow it goes to the garage for checking so we will see. Only posted this to show that the "Kseries rover engines, oh its the Head gasket they all do that" mantra is still alive and well, and there is a commonality of engine. Chris.S.

Maybe we should also mention the HG issues the New Focus RS had, since they had a habit of failing after just 5k miles? Sorry, but people like that just annoy me.

I've had people say to me "Have you had problems with the head gasket?". I always say "It hasn't got one!". When they look dumfounded, I say "It's got two and they are fine thank you!".

Mileshawk56 - before you or the garage do anything, either get the current cap checked or fit a new, GENUINE one from Rimmers
I was recently involved with a TF which would constantly boil up....turned out the brand new, non-genuine cap was opening around 7psi, when the system is designed to work at 15psi From what I've read, the caps are a very common problem, gradually loosing pressure over time. I guess the fact that the car was being run up, sitting in a garage with no natural airflow, could well have tipped it over the boiling point

Thanks for all your advice and comments- the fault was the" coolant fan relay" had failed! £5.00! Something to bear in mind. The thermostat/waterpump/operation of the system and everything else was checked(not cheap) before this was found to be the fault. Anyway all well and another HG problem put to bed. Chris S.

My tester must be a bit brighter than some of the others..
Every car I take, on collection has the heater controls on max and the fan on full. "To dump the heat after the emissions test, mate" |
