Default Timing belts

Firstly, I know the advice is generally if in doubt replace the cambelt, and agree it is sound thinking. But.....

Has anyone known a KV6 cambelt fail ever?

In an ideal world I would change mine straight away, but I am not in a position to do it now. I am trying to gauge how high the likelihood of failure might be on a 14 year old car that has done 57k and assuming worst case scenario that it has never been changed.

Thanks
Jamie

Bit of a contentious subject on here. No doubt you will get some opinions posted up, but hold on tight, it could get s bit stormy

I think it's up to you really at the end of the day.

Having just bought a 2000 2.0 V6 that's on 48,000 & never had them done, I will be having them replaced. It's not just the mileage you have to consider. I think the recommendation is X number of miles or Y many years

Regards

Paul

When I got mine in Feb 2017, at 62k, I couldn't find any record of belt change. I asked the guys at the Rover Centre in St Albans and they said they had only ever seen one example of KV6 belt failure.

Of course, NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-'s law could mean that mine would be the second but their view was to run the car for a year (I'm only doing 2k a year) and then see how things are. Would be silly to do the belts as soon as buying the car (£750 is quoted) and then find a shed load of other problems.

Fortunately, soon after buying the car I found a little tick in the service book from back in 2014 when it was serviced at Summit in Dudley (https://www.summitgarage.co.uk/) that they had done the belts at, I recall, 52k.

So my suggestion is the same. Crack on with the other more critical stuff, including rust removal and prevention, sealing any leaks, sorting all the usual stuff (plenum drains, handbrake, VIS, fan resistor, bonnet cable, headlight lenses etc.)

Once you are in for a grand or so, take stock of the car...is it a keeper? If so, then find someone you can trust to do the belts and pump properly.

It seems a lot of money but, in the big scheme of things.....you have opted to buy a heavy V6 car that will always cost more to run than cheaper smaller options. If you can't afford it, as they say, buy a 1 litre rollerskate.

The choice is yours at the end of the day, the question is if it does fail, how much will you rely on your car?

That's a dangerous question to ask on here, there will be disagreements, fall outs, people will leave the forum etc etc.

Good replies, thanks. You are right, it's my choice but I am just trying to find information on which to base the decision.

I like the wait and see suggestion, and see if it is worth it. I am going to wait and see. If it goes pop maybe an interesting engine swap could be had, lol.

Ive seen a well serviced KV6 belt go, and I’ve seen the damage caused. It was a member car in at Turbo Dave’s getting a replacement engine fitted.
