75 1.8T leaking water
Hi everyone, just got a 2006 75 1.8T and having a few problems!
Drove home from Manchester to Leeds no problem, 70mph on motorway no overheating, cabin vents blowing plenty of hot air. Then this afternoon I took it for about a 10 mile drive and noticed that the cabin heater vents started blowing cold. Then the temp gauge started climbing and the red light came on, I pulled over and checked the header tank and it was low and dropping. I looked under the engine and saw water running on to the Tarmac. I checked the header tank cap, the dip stick and the oil cap and there was no mayonnaise? I managed to top up the header tank then drive the remaining 5 miles home with no issues. I pulled up on the drive and checked the header tank to see if I'd lost any more water but it was full, however as soon as I removed the cap it's like the pressure was altered and then the water level began to drop again and leak beneath the engine. Any ideas? Is this likely to be HGF or cracked Cylinder head? |

To answer your question, from the account you have provided I see no evidence of HGF or a cracked cylinder head. You appear to have a plain and simple coolant leak. Have a careful look around the engine bay for signs of the source of the leak. If you have an undertray fitted, take it off to help with the investigation. Simon

Inlet manifold, T-piece, water pump, hose, cap anywhere else you can check.
And, of course you can have HGF. I would look carefully at the water pump. |

Refill the header to the Max Mark in the tank. Bring the engine up to operating temperature and check for leaks. As the engine is cooling continue to check for leaks at hose joints, inlet manifold and the plastic T piece in the top hose behind the radiator.
Particularly check the area surrounding the water pump.. |
