Anyone in the North West got a tap & die set?
Bit of a long shot
I need to put cut two threads into existing holes on my motorbike frame and begrudge paying for a full T&D set So, has anyone in the North West got a tap & die set and wouldn't mind me paying them a visit one evening next month? You never know... |

Hi
I've got a few taps and a few dies, and the tools to use them. What sizes do you need ?. An individual tap or die is not all that expensive. I also have a thread gauge as well. I live in Crewe |

Hi Fraser.
I've been told to use M8 bolts so I guess 8mm? I'll be honest though, I know nothing about this sort of thing |

Being an owner of a BGT, I only have Imperial taps and dies.
But if this is likely to be an odd job (and it's often worth cleaning out threaded holes prior to assembly with a tap - paint etc) you might find it worthwhile getting it from the likes of Halfords or MachineMart. Otherwise, stick the frame in the back of your car and visit your local engineering business, they'd do it, and probably for a couple of beer tokens in the pocket. |

Guessing 8x1.25 or 8x1.5 will be the size needed depends on how coarse the thread is. If its a one off I would buy them as a single tap and get a 13mm headed nut carefully using a vice press the nut onto the end of the tap.Hold a rag over it as taps are brittle and may break. Using this method you wont have to buy the expensive tap wrench only use a 13mm socket / spanner.
A lot of manufacturers use this method for speed of repair - but just be careful. edit £6.78 delivered : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/10pc-tap-wrenc...QQcmdZViewItem Last edited by Lates; 27th May 2007 at 21:08.. |
