I'll be in Bownes-on-Windermere on Monday for a week. Cleaned the walking boots this morning.

I went to Windermere via the Kirkstone Pass (also known as "The Struggle"!) once, note ONCE . . . . never again!

Tommorow would have been my eldest brothers 73rd birthday.
Sadly he passed away in November last year so I will be visiting the farm in Muirkirk where we were both born. The farm is no longer there after being “eaten up” with the opencast coal but over the years it has given me a place to visit and remember. Fly high big brother. |

If you want some REAL hills in the Lake District - try Hardknott and Wrynose passes - they'll warm your clutch up for you

No, it's the first, very steep part of the Kirkstone pass as you leave Ambleside. There is no alternative route until you reach the Kirkstone Inn at the top of the pass.

PS, Langdale, leading to Hardknott and Wrynose Passes is a nightmare in a wide car with manual gearbox - you can't see over the walls or round corners, and you generally have to reverse to a passing place if you meet something. I prefer my tall, narrow, slow auto 4x4 for those roads.
