Default My Rover Blows Hot Air for No Reason

I have owned a 2000 Rover for about a year and whenever I do not have the Air Conditioning or the Heat on, the Rover will blow very hot air.

Once I engage the heating system or A/C it does what it's supposed to do.

Also, this air blowing from my engine it seems, will fog up the windows occasionally but then when I use the defroster it clears up . . . weird.

The hot air seems to blow from the windscreen blower and floor and sometimes it feels like my left foot is in a desert.

I had a car that did this when the head gasket was cracked but the Rocker Cover gaskets were replaced in December. I've noticed this issue ever since I bought the car but just dealt with it.

All air flow is controlled by a system of automatic electrically operated flaps which direct the required amount of hot or cold air to the required vents, when you switch off the system the flaps remain in the last position, if this position was to direct warm air then you will continue to get warm air when the car is in forward motion

Ron,

I've noticed this too, and my car is of a similar age to yours. I get misted windows immediately after disengaging the air conditioning. This suggests that the evaporator drain tubes are blocked, causing condensate to remain in the heater unit which then humidifies the air. I haven't managed to prove this theory yet.

It clears up when the defroster is used because in that mode the air conditioning activates, and that removes moisture from the cabin air.

Simon.

Sorry I am not helping your plight, but thought I would mention that swmbo has been doing this for years and I have had to learn to live with it !

I take it that the misting occurs too quickly for it to be due to moisture from breathing then?

I know that the drain tubes leave drops under the car under some conditions, but perhaps not all. If you can find out in what circumstances there should be water dripping out you could then simply look/feel for water at the bottom of the tubes or on the ground.

The tops of the tubes are awkward to get at, if they do need to be rodded through, I have seem them when I took my carpet out, and I think you would have to at least pull the carpet up from the footwells, if not move the entire carpet backwards. Not to be recommended if it can be helped, it's a fair bit of dismantling!

Thanks for all your help guys.

I tested out putting the air on a cooler setting then turning it off and wouldn't you know . . . the same temperature air would still blow through when driving.

I appreciate your help. Thanks.
