Default 2002 Auto 2.5 V6 petrol connie:Air filter base?

I am attempting to access the auto gearbox filler which apparently is under the air filter base?
So far I have slackened off throttle hose large clip, removed air filter top plus air filter.
Mr Haynes now states: Lift off air filter base from rear two grommets and release from air duct at front!!!
So far I have tried every trick in the book,to release the base from the two grommets, including brute strength and the use of a lever but all to no avail.
Am I missing something,or is it a case of persevering, just keep pulling/levering until it releases.
Cheers Caskin

Just brute strength, recently had a fight with one and broke one of the two lugs on the bottom as it refused to budge. Once off apply your favourite grease to the rubber rings which'll make it easier next time. If you have time on your side you could try spraying some penetrating oil around the bottom of the base, I doubt if it'll help much but who knows?

Regards

while you have the air-box off, check the tubing attached to the bottom of it. Unless it has been replaced, it will have disintegrated.

Just a helpful tip for you Derek. It's not necessary to remove the air filter cover or the filter element itself. Leave them in place so that you can get a firm grip on the whole housing.

Hi Simon.........Excellent advice which to be honest I hadnt thought of...however I did have some instant success with an idea I had.No amount of tugging and twisitng would shift what I assume had been in place since the car was new in 2002!!!
My idea was to place a length of 8mm nylon cord, down between the battery box and the air filter base, then pull it firm up against the prongs where they entered the grommets, under the casing.
Tie a firm knot in the ends of the cord, then place a short length of 2" x 1" (or similar) timber under the now formed loop in the cord.place the front end of timber on metal work at front of car, then using that point as the pivot, lift the other end of the timber sharply up,the casing popped out lie a new born babe, simples!!!!
Any ideas on how to get really obstinate engine tray screws to move.Shifted 6 but have 2 that will not shift!! Think I might as well obtain an inpact screwdriver,or grind them off!!!

NO,thats mainly the problem,if they were posidrive I would have them out in seconds, but they are cross cut headed screws with the cut being very shallow and insufficent material to allow me to cut a deeper slot. And thats another thing,as you mention I was expecting dzus fasteners but thses are fully threaded screws approx 3/4" in length!
Ive managed to get my hands on some screw removal tools which basically consisits of a specialised drill which when reversed becomes an easy out!

Simon whilst you are there another question for you if you dont mind...Ive done this job twice before,a complete drain of the auto oil system 8 litres plus replenishment. What I cannot remember is,when I come to the drain the cooling system via the bottom oil cooler connection, when I run the engine to pump out the system 4litres,does the gearbox have to be in a gear or is it OK in park??? As you get older its not just the meory that fades!!!
