If the air con is operating, but the refrigerant/oil mix is low, that may also cause an unpleasant noise from the compressor.

Other thing to check is power steering fluid, although that's obviously more prominent when turning.

Cheers bud

Air con on auto .
Usually on LO - I like cold.
But once increase temp to say 17 + the stinky smell appears!

Turning is fine - no noise or issues at all....
Power steering is checked in last service (unless its leaking )

Try pressing the econ button. If the noise disappears, the compressor is making the noise. A re-gas may cure this, but the compressor may be worn.

Ben, I was thinking that about my whirring noise, but I've had aircon off at all times.

It's always a worry. Mine makes an unpleasant noise in the winter until warmed up.

Thinking I'm going to have to shell out for her 3rd cambelt service under my ownership. Not cheap motoring.

No where near.

Bought her at 5 and a half years old with 37k on in 08. Paid local garage to fit cambelt kit and water pump on her 6th birthday in Aug 08. (I think) March 2011 thermostat failed, so replaced that. Didn't know about the airlock potentials without following proper refill procedure. Airlock blew bodged silicone mess that local garage had made by damaging seal on BRAND NEW water pump. Took to Nick at Austin garages to do another full kit change, with genuine kit bought off ebay. Belts were dated 05. Not happy , but not able to shell out again, so fitted them.
Two engine mount bolts also missing thanks to local garage. Nick obviously spotted all the errors, and rectified.

Now this noise last winter has me worried, so at 87k, I have no intention of changing cars, so . . . bet you're sorry you asked now.
